Vermont "Montie" McGillvary Obituary


Vermont D. “Montie” McGillvary, age 86, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at his home in Mendon.

He was born May 20, 1934, near Mendon, to the late Orville Lee & Dorothy Dale (Skinner) McGillvary.

Montie and Carole Clay were married on February 19, 1956.  She survives, along with their three children: Greg (Amy) McGillvary of Walled Lake, Michigan, and Lori (Jim) Bader and Kari (Chris) Cron, all of Celina. 

Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Hillary, Clay, Morgan, Brady, Kasey, Luke, Paige and Aaron, and three great grandkids: Landon, Reese and Ella.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty McGillvary, on November 2nd, and a brother and his wife: Ed & Judy Huwer McGillvary.

Montie was a 1952 graduate of Mendon-Union High School, and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving at Fort Gordon, Georgia.  He had been employed at Goodyear in St. Marys for 17 years.  Montie then worked for the Empire Family Restaurants for 24 years, retiring as District Manager.  Later, he worked at the St. Peter Neurological Center for 5 years.

A member of the Mendon First Church of God, Montie attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Liberty Township.  He served 8 years on the Mendon-Union School Board.  Montie had been a member of the Mendon Lions Club and the National Restaurant Association.  

Montie recently received his 60 year pin as a Mason, having been a member of Mendon Masonic Lodge #586 and later, Shanes Lodge #377 in Rockford.  He enjoyed golf, fishing, and playing cards.  Montie was an avid fan of all his grandkid's and great-grandkid's sports functions.

Calling Hours are at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Mendon, on Saturday, November 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the Funeral Service, beginning at 1:00.  Pastor Robin Owen will officiate.  

Following the Service, Military Rites will be conducted at the Funeral Home by American Legion Post #210 and VFW Post #5713 of Celina.  Burial will take place at a later date at Mendon Cemetery. 

Those attending are required to wear masks, practice social distancing as much as possible, and follow the COVID-19 guidelines established by Governor DeWine and the Ohio Department of Health.
