Michael Frank Hoelscher, age 89, of Celina, passed away Friday, March 6, 2026, at his residence.
Mike was born June 9, 1936, in Celina, a son of the late Alfred H. & Lucy M. (Franck) Hoelscher.
Mike and Shirley E. (Sheets) were married January 27, 1960, and spent 57 wonderful years together before Shirley's death on August 5, 2017.
Surviving are their children: Sheryl (Phil) Borger of Franklin, and Tonita (Bob) Phipps, Bill Hoelscher, Mary Lynn (Kevin) Meyer and Kurt (Julie Parent) Hoelscher, all of Celina.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren: Tyrone (Susie) Borger, Jason (Beth) Borger, Travis (Amy) Borger, Clint (Cindy) Springer, Amanda (Patrik) Loveless, Abby (Drew) Miller, Kyle (Courtney) Hoelscher, Maddy (Ryan) Rogel, Cherylynn Topp, Brad (Megan) Meyer and Heather (Chris Coats) Leist, step-grandchildren: Greg (Stacy) Phipps, Jeff Phipps, Matt Parent and Jennifer (Rick) Halsen, 38 great grandchildren and 32 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers: David Hoelscher and Samuel Hoelscher, granddaughters: Jessica and Rachael Springer, a great granddaughter, brothers-in-law: Rex (Marilyn) Sheets and Gary Sheets, and his parents-in-law: H. Glenn & Evelyn (Rexroth) Sheets.
After attending St. Henry High School, Mike joined the U.S. Army Reserves.
Mike was one of the first employees at Huffy Bicycles when they opened in 1954. His timeclock # was 9. At Huffy's he met the love of his life, Shirley, who was also an employee.
In 1960, he went to work for Speicher Brothers Trenchers and became their plant manager. Mike made changes to machinery designs to improve performance.
Mike was co-founder, along with his wife Shirley, of H&S Company, Inc. of Celina, manufacturing and repairing commercial trenchers. They acquired both Speicher Brothers and Buckeye Trenchers. In 1990, Mike developed a new trencher design that carried the company for decades.
He restored Speicher Trencher Serial #2, and was in the process of restoring a steam powered Buckeye Trencher.
Mike was a member of the NRA (National Rifle Association) and HOG (Harley Owners Group), Celina Eagles Aerie #1291 and Celina American Legion Post #210.
He enjoyed building and flying model airplanes. Mike and Shirley enjoyed traveling together, especially trips on their Harley-Davidson. For two weeks of every year, they traveled by motorcycle making trips to Sturgis, South Dakota and nearly every state.
Mike was known for always doing shenanigans, creating havoc all in good spirit.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 18th, at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Celina, with Vicar Mary Miller, officiating.
Burial will follow at Neptune Cemetery, with graveside military rites to be conducted by Celina American Legion Post #210 and VFW Post #5713.
Calling Hours are 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 17th, and an hour prior to Services on Wednesday, at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Celina.
