John H. Zumberge, age 87, of Celina, died Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at The Gardens at Celina Nursing Home.
John was born on January 20, 1923 in Celina, to Charles and Caroline
(Stukenborg) Zumberge. On June 11, 1949, he married Virginia L. Kittle who died January 20, 2005.
John is survived by five children,
Charles Zumberge, Steve (Ginny) Zumberge, Michael (Cheryl) Zumberge, Theresa Zumberge and Jennifer Zumberge, all of Celina. A son-in-law, Scott Nicodemus survives in Covington. There are five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Preceding John in death were a daughter, Loree Nicodemus and grandsons, John and Jesse Nicodemus. Also preceding John were brothers, Fr. August Zumberge and Ed Zumberge and sisters, Erma Winner, Annette Vander Horst, Ann Knapke, Hilda Sommers and Margaret Dabbelt.
John was a 1940 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, John served in the Phillipines. John was a life long farmer in Jefferson Township and a member of numerous organizations. He was a life member of the Celina Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5713 and the Celina Knights of Columbus. John was a Jefferson Township trustee for 33 years. He served on the Board of Mercer Landmark for 35 years and the State Landmark Board for many years. John was a member of the State Farm Bureau Board for 15 years and the Mercer County Farm Bureau Board for many years.
Calling hours were from 1 - 7 P.M., Sunday, January 23 at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Celina. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, January 24, 2011 at Immaculate Conception Church, Fr. Ken Alt, C.PP.S. presided. Burial was in St. Marys Catholic Cemetery. Military Rites were performed by Celina American Legion Post #5713 and Celina American Legion Post #210.
