Obituary

James Paul (Jim) Hogan, age 80 of Celina, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at St. Rita’s Hospital in Lima, with his family at his side.

He was born on December 5, 1941, in Dayton, Ohio to the late Edwin Theodore Hogan and Mary Teresa (Schenking) Hogan.

On September 27, 1975, he married Gayetta Gamble, who survives, living in Celina.  Jim is also survived by two daughters, Christin (Allen) Hunter of Durham, NC and Martina Hogan (Brian Swift) of Chicago, IL, and his grandson Riley James Hunter of Durham, NC.  He is also survived by one brother, Robert (Shirley) Hogan of Coldwater, OH, and sister-in-law, Barbara Anderson of Clemmons, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Betty Giere and Patricia Forsthoefel, and three brothers-in-law, Fritz Giere, Thomas Forsthoefel, and Donald Anderson.

Jim earned his Juris Doctorate from Ohio Northern University in 1972.  During his career he served several years as Mercer County Assistant Prosecutor and retired from his Hogan Law Firm in 2006.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Celina, Celina Knights of Columbus Council 1800, and the Mercer County Bar Association.  He was President of the Community Involvement Committee in 1983, helping to establish the Mercer County Community Improvement Corporation.  He was also a past member of the Mercer County Community Hospital’s MED Foundation, past President of the Celina Area Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Lake Festival Steering Committee.

He loved his family dearly, enjoyed playing with his grandson, and lived light-heartedly, always having a humorous story or joke on hand and a friendly smile.  Among his many interests were music (including playing trumpet in a local dance band during high school and college), photography, car shows, gardening, tending to his orchard, and crafting wooden toys and puzzles.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, October 24th, at Immaculate Conception Church in Celina, with Father Rob Muhlenkamp presiding.  Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday, October 23rd, at W.H. Dick and Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Celina.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Immaculate Conception Endowment Fund at 229 W. Anthony St., Celina, OH or Knights of Columbus Council 1800 at PO Box 67, Celina, OH.
