George W. Swygart

Mr. George W. Swygart, age 92, of Mendon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Briarwood Village in Coldwater.

He was born May 12, 1932, in Van Wert County, to the late Emery G. and Frances L. (Crider) Swygart, of Van Wert.

On October 20, 1977, George married Linda Swygart, who survives.

Also surviving are their children: David W. (Jean) Swygart of Cary, North Carolina, Pam Haffey of Celina, Randy Swygart of Mendon, Susan (Jeff) Roehm of Willshire, and Terry Snyder of Los Angeles, California; 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; his sister: Jane (Bob) Harter of Ohio City; and five brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.

Preceding him in death was a sister and brother-in-law: Janell & Stanley Miller; son-in-law, Larry D. Haffey; and sisters-in-law: Janet (Stanley) Emans and Vickie Trisel.

He graduated in 1951 from York Township High School in Van Wert County.  George was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953, and fought on Pork Chop Hill.  He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sargeant.    

George had previously been a member of the Masons, and was affiliated with Salem Presbyterian Church in Venedocia. 

George was a hard worker with a warm heart.  He was a farmer before he began driving trucks for 35 years for companies in the Van Wert area.  After retirement, he served as a Union Township Trustee for several years. 

George was an avid hunter, who loved the outdoors.  Over the years, he met many new friends, and enjoyed their stories and their friendship.  He never met a stranger.

George loved to cook, and always had a garden.  A handyman, he could do or fix anything.  George was so loved, and will be so missed by his wife and kids.

Calling Hours will be held on Friday, August 16, at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Mendon, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by the Funeral Service, starting at 12:30.   Pastor Randy Bevington will officiate.

Burial will follow at Tomlinson Cemetery, Rockford, with graveside Military Rites to be conducted by Celina American Legion Post #210 and VFW Post #5713.
