Bernice Gwendolyn "Gwen" Uncapher Obituary

Bernice Gwendolyn “Gwen” Uncapher, age 92, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at her home near Mendon, where her loving family had cared for her the past few years.

She was born October 29, 1927, in Van Wert County, to George Allen Sr. & Mildred Gwendolyn (Ditto) Armstrong.

Gwen and William Austin “Bud” Uncapher were married on March 14, 1949, and he preceded her in death October 1, 1999.

She is survived by their 4 children: Dennis "Sam" (Deb) Uncapher of Mendon, Steve (Jo) Uncapher of Rockford, Marcia (Tom) Miller of Mendon, and Darlene Uncapher (Mike Vann) of Rockford, 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Alfred ("Tootie") Armstrong of St. Marys, and sisters-in-law: Barbara Armstrong of Mendon, Norma Jean Stienecker of Celina, and Billie (Johnny) Wickham of South Point.  Her late daughter Janet’s partner in life, Kerry Burrington, survives in Sebring, FL.

Gwen was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Uncapher, who died August 23, 2019, 2 great-granddaughters, and brothers & sisters: Edith (Layton) Adams, George Jr. (Mildred and Linda) Armstrong, Paul (Marilyn) Armstrong, Thomas Armstrong, Catherine (Harold) Fleming, and an infant brother, Larry Armstrong.

A Homemaker, Gwen had worked at National Seal and Borden Foods in Van Wert, Goodyear and the Cotton Mill in St. Marys, and then retired from Huffy Bicycles in Celina.  Years ago, Gwen and her husband also operated Bud's Restaurant in Mendon.

Gwen was a member of the Mendon United Methodist Church for many years.  A 70-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Mendon and later Spencerville, she had held several positions within the organization.  Representing the Eastern Star, Gwen had traveled throughout Ohio and parts of the U.S.

Always a thoughtful gift giver, Gwen lovingly made crocheted afghans, baby blankets and other items for her family.  She made quilts for all of her children and blankets for the grandchildren.  She also enjoyed needlepoint, ceramics, sewing and reading.

Gwen researched family genealogy extensively, and presented each of her children with books on detailed family history which she prepared.
